City Official Notice: National Guard Deployment and Upcoming Public Hearings

Community Safety and Law Enforcement Support
As of Sunday, January 25, 2026, the City of Minneapolis has formally activated the Minnesota National Guard to support local law enforcement and preserve community safety. This deployment follows a request from Mayor Jacob Frey and a recommendation from the Minneapolis Police Chief to reinforce resources stretched thin by ongoing federal immigration enforcement actions. Guard members will be primarily stationed in the vicinity of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue to support local police and emergency personnel. Residents are advised that Guard personnel will be distinguishable by neon reflective vests and will remain in close proximity to Minneapolis Police officers. The city maintains that these resources are intended to protect the constitutional rights of community members and ensure public order during local unrest.
Public Health Alerts and Product Recalls
The Minneapolis Health Department, in coordination with state and federal partners, has issued two critical health notifications active this week:
- Dietary Supplement Recall: The FDA has issued a public health advisory regarding 'Live it Up-brand Super Greens' dietary supplement powder. The product is being voluntarily recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination. Consumers are advised to immediately dispose of or return any product with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028.
- Immunization Alignment: The Minnesota Department of Health has updated its official guidance to align with the latest medical association immunization recommendations. Residents are encouraged to review these updates with their primary care providers to ensure they are current with seasonal respiratory health protocols.
City Council and Commission Meeting Schedule
Public participation is invited for several upcoming legislative and commission sessions. Residents may register to speak up to 30 minutes before the start of each meeting:
- Heritage Preservation Commission: Meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. The commission will receive public comments regarding the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Fawkes Auto Complex located at 1621-1635 Hennepin Ave. Additional applications for window replacements in the Healy Block Historic District and siding repairs in the St. Anthony Falls Historic District will also be reviewed.
- Board of Adjustment: Meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. to discuss various residential variance applications.
Winter Maintenance and Parking Reminders
While a Snow Emergency is not currently in effect for January 25, the City of Minneapolis reminds property owners of the mandatory sidewalk clearing ordinance. Sidewalks adjacent to houses and duplexes must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours of a snowfall; all other properties must be cleared within four daytime hours. Failure to comply may result in a city-contracted crew clearing the path at the owner’s expense. Free sand for traction remains available at several designated city locations to assist residents in maintaining safe pedestrian access.
