Public Safety Notice: National Guard Assistance and Vehicle Perimeters

Mayor Jacob Frey has formally requested the assistance of the Minnesota National Guard to reinforce local law enforcement resources in Minneapolis. This request, effective as of January 26, 2026, aims to support the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) as resources remain strained due to ongoing federal immigration enforcement operations. Guard personnel will be stationed near 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue and other strategic posts to ensure community safety. Residents are advised that Guard members will wear neon reflective vests to distinguish themselves from other agencies.

Additionally, a temporary vehicle perimeter remains in effect near the scene of recent incidents. Except for residential traffic, vehicles are currently prohibited from entering the area bounded by Franklin Avenue to 28th Street, and from Pillsbury Avenue to I-35W. Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes to avoid congestion and allow for public safety operations.

Weather Advisory: Extreme Cold Warning

The City of Minneapolis remains under an extreme cold weather alert. With dangerously low temperatures and wind chills settling over the region this week, health officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure. Frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes under these conditions. If you must go outside, the City recommends the following precautions:

  • Dress in multiple warm layers, including insulated footwear, gloves, and hats.
  • Ensure all skin is covered to prevent cold-related injuries.
  • Take frequent warming breaks in climate-controlled environments.
  • Keep clothing dry, as moisture significantly increases heat loss.

Public Service Announcement: Winter Parking Restrictions

To ensure streets remain passable for emergency vehicles, fire engines, and school buses, one-sided winter parking restrictions are currently active. Unless a Snow Emergency is declared, the following rules apply:

  • Parking is permitted only on the ODD-numbered side of non-Snow Emergency routes.
  • Parking is prohibited on the EVEN-numbered side of these streets until further notice.
  • Parking remains allowed on both sides of designated Snow Emergency routes and parkways unless otherwise posted.

Health Advisory: Voluntary Product Recall

The Minneapolis Health Department is echoing a national advisory regarding a voluntary recall of Live it Up-brand Super Greens dietary supplement powder. The recall, issued due to potential Salmonella contamination, affects all original and wild berry flavors with expiration dates between August 2026 and January 2028. Residents should check their pantries and dispose of these products immediately. Symptoms of infection include fever, cramps, and diarrhea; those experiencing symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.

Upcoming Public Meetings

The following official meetings are scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, 2026:

  • Business, Housing & Zoning Committee: 1:30 p.m. in Room 380, City Hall.
  • Heritage Preservation Commission: 4:30 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes a public hearing regarding the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Fawkes Auto Complex on Hennepin Avenue.
