Final Minnesota locations set to close March 28

The D’Amico family’s last two operating restaurants in Minnesota—D’Amico & Sons in Edina and Golden Valley—are scheduled to close on March 28, 2026, when their leases end. The closures will leave Minnesota without a D’Amico-owned restaurant for the first time in more than four decades, concluding a long-running chapter in the Twin Cities’ dining landscape.

Both remaining locations have operated for roughly three decades as part of the D’Amico & Sons fast-casual concept, known for Italian-American staples and takeout-friendly service. The two stores are the final Twin Cities outposts after a series of earlier closures across the metro, including the original Uptown location, which closed in 2016 amid a building sale, and the St. Paul Grand Avenue location, which closed in 2019 at the end of its lease.

How the D’Amico group reshaped local dining

Brothers Richard and Larry D’Amico launched their restaurant group in 1982, establishing a model that combined hospitality-driven service with a portfolio approach to concepts. In the years that followed, the company expanded into multiple formats, ranging from upscale dining rooms to casual cafes and catering operations. A third partner, Paul Smith, joined the business in the mid-1980s as the group grew.

The company’s influence was reinforced through landmark dining rooms that became training grounds for chefs who later led some of the region’s best-known kitchens. Over time, however, the group’s Minnesota footprint steadily narrowed as leases ended and concepts closed or shifted.

Recent departures and the move away from Minnesota restaurants

The decision to close the Edina and Golden Valley D’Amico & Sons follows the wind-down of the group’s full-service Minnesota portfolio in 2025. Café & Bar Lurcat, a prominent Loring Park fixture for more than two decades, ended service on Sept. 5, 2025 after the group opted not to renew its lease.

With the final two D’Amico & Sons locations closing in late March, the family’s operational focus is expected to be centered outside Minnesota. D’Amico-branded food businesses continue to operate in Florida, including an Italian market and bakery in Oviedo with a national shipping operation.

What closes, and what remains

  • Closing March 28, 2026: D’Amico & Sons (Edina) and D’Amico & Sons (Golden Valley)
  • Previously closed: Uptown Minneapolis (original D’Amico & Sons location, closed in 2016); St. Paul Grand Avenue (closed in 2019)
  • Continuing operations outside Minnesota: D’Amico-branded Italian market/bakery in Oviedo, Florida

The March 28 closures mark the end of D’Amico-owned restaurants operating in Minnesota, closing a more-than-40-year arc that began in 1982.

The end date is now set, but the broader impact—on former employees, chef pipelines, and neighborhood dining patterns—will be measured over time as the Twin Cities continues to see established operators depart and new concepts take their place.
