Minneapolis City Bulletin: Winter Parking, Health Alerts, and Emergency Aid

Public Health Advisory: Extreme Cold and Product Recall
The City of Minneapolis remains under an extreme cold weather alert as dangerously low temperatures and wind chills settle over the region. Health officials urge all residents to limit outdoor exposure, as frostbite can occur within minutes. If travel is necessary, the city recommends dressing in multiple insulated layers and ensuring all skin is covered. Additionally, the Minneapolis Health Department has issued a voluntary recall notice for 'Live it Up-brand Super Greens' dietary supplement powder. The recall, due to potential Salmonella contamination, affects all flavors with expiration dates between August 2026 and January 2028. Residents are advised to dispose of these products immediately and contact a healthcare provider if they experience symptoms such as fever or abdominal cramps.
City Council Approves Emergency Rental Assistance
In a 9-4 vote held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Minneapolis City Council approved the allocation of $1 million in emergency rental assistance. These funds are specifically intended to stabilize households facing eviction or sudden loss of income due to the ongoing federal enforcement operations across the Twin Cities. The assistance will be administered through Hennepin County’s existing eviction-prevention infrastructure to provide immediate relief to vulnerable families. This measure follows a formal resolution by the council calling for an eviction moratorium during the current state of emergency.
Winter Parking and Traffic Notifications
While a Snow Emergency is not currently in effect, one-sided winter parking restrictions remain active to ensure streets are passable for emergency vehicles and school buses. Residents must park only on the ODD-numbered side of non-Snow Emergency routes. Parking on the even-numbered side of these streets is strictly prohibited until further notice. Normal parking rules still apply on designated Snow Emergency routes and parkways.
Commuters should also be aware of localized traffic disruptions near the University of Minnesota campus. Following a large-scale fire at the Steam Plant on Main St SE early Saturday morning, the Minneapolis Fire Department and UMPD remain on-site. While the fire has been extinguished, traffic control measures are still in effect, and drivers are encouraged to avoid the immediate area to allow for ongoing safety inspections.
School and Community Updates
Minneapolis Public Schools has announced an extension of online learning options through April 6, 2026. This decision aims to support families who may be avoiding travel due to the heightened federal presence in the city. Additionally, the city has received a nomination for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing the community's solidarity and commitment to human rights during recent periods of unrest.
