Murder and robbery charges filed after fatal shooting inside Minneapolis Abbott Apartments over Louis Vuitton bag

Incident in Stevens Square led to felony murder allegation
A 20-year-old Minneapolis man is facing felony-level charges after a fatal shooting inside the Abbott Apartments in the Stevens Square neighborhood that investigators say unfolded during an armed robbery attempt focused on a Louis Vuitton bag.
The defendant, Abdirahman Khayre Khayre, is charged with second-degree unintentional murder and first-degree aggravated robbery. The case centers on a shooting reported at about 10:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, in a first-floor common area near the lobby of the apartment building on the 100 block of East 18th Street.
What investigators say happened
In the criminal complaint, a witness told investigators that he and the victim went to the building to spend time with Khayre in a lounge area. The witness said Khayre left the room repeatedly and appeared to delay events before a group entered and demanded property.
Authorities allege four men were involved in the robbery. The witness described two handgun-style weapons with extended magazines and a rifle-style weapon being displayed during the confrontation. Investigators allege the group demanded the victim’s Louis Vuitton bag and that the victim resisted, leading to a physical struggle.
The complaint further alleges that, during the robbery, two firearms were taken from the witness and that one of those firearms was handed to Khayre. The witness reported fleeing into the lobby after Khayre pointed a gun at him, then hearing multiple gunshots moments later. When the witness returned, the victim had been shot.
Evidence described in the court record
Police reviewed surveillance footage from the lounge and other areas of the building. Investigators state the video was consistent with substantial portions of the witness account. The witness later identified Khayre in a photo lineup, the complaint states.

Conditional release status and next steps
Court records indicate Khayre was on conditional release in a separate pending case at the time of the shooting. In the homicide case, bail was set at $1 million, and Khayre remains in custody.
Second-degree unintentional murder under Minnesota law can be charged when a death occurs during the commission of certain felonies, even without an allegation of intent to kill.
The identity of the victim had not been publicly released in initial reports. The homicide investigation remains active, and investigators have continued seeking information about the other alleged participants.
