Public Notice: City Council Schedule Updates and Winter Health Advisories

Minneapolis City Council Session and Schedule Changes
The Minneapolis City Council will convene for a full session today, Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chamber, Room 380, at City Hall. This meeting comes amidst a significant restructuring of the regular legislative cycle. Due to the ongoing presence of federal agents in the city and the resulting impact on community needs and administrative staff, several committee meetings have been canceled or consolidated. Residents are advised that items normally referred to standing committees are currently being directed to the Committee of the Whole (COW) to ensure constituent priorities are met during this period of heightened local activity.
Winter Health and Safety Advisories
The City and the Medical Review Unit have issued a persistent medical alert for the Winter 2025-2026 season regarding frostbite and hypothermia. Given the risks associated with cold weather emergencies, officials urge residents to monitor vulnerable neighbors, particularly those who are unhoused or have complex medical needs. Additionally, the University of Minnesota’s CIDRAP has released a public health alert concerning Paenibacillus dendritiformis, an emerging infectious threat identified in infants. Parents and caregivers should remain vigilant for severe neurologic symptoms. Furthermore, the city is monitoring a nationwide surge in measles cases, which has reached nearly 600 cases so far this year, and continues to promote vaccination as the primary defense against community outbreaks.
Community Support and Federal Response Resources
In response to the federal government's Operation Metro Surge, the City of Minneapolis remains committed to supporting impacted residents. While a drawdown of approximately 700 federal officers was announced earlier this week, roughly 2,000 agents remain in the region. The city continues to offer the following resources through its Federal Response page:
- Emergency food and rental assistance for families in crisis.
- Legal resources for those navigating immigration enforcement actions.
- Health services and mental health support for residents experiencing trauma due to the ongoing federal presence.
- Public assembly guidelines: Residents are reminded that while peaceful assembly is permitted on sidewalks and in public parks, it is prohibited to block freeways or damage property.
Upcoming Public Board Meetings
In addition to the main City Council session, the following public meetings are scheduled for late this afternoon at the Public Service Building and City Hall:
- Pedestrian Advisory Committee: 4:00 p.m., Room 100AB, Public Service Building.
- Planning Commission Committee of the Whole: 4:30 p.m., Room 100C, Public Service Building.
Agendas for these meetings are available through the City Clerk’s office. For additional assistance with city services or to report non-emergency issues, residents are encouraged to contact 311 or use the city's mobile reporting application.
