Downtown Congestion and Public Demonstrations

Commuters and visitors should prepare for significant disruptions in downtown Minneapolis today, Saturday, January 31, 2026. A large-scale general strike and "Day of Action" are expected to bring tens of thousands of participants into the city center. Major gathering points include the areas surrounding U.S. Bank Stadium, the Target Center, and Government Plaza. With marches planned throughout the afternoon, rolling road closures are anticipated on several key downtown arteries. Drivers are advised to avoid the central business district if possible or utilize parking on the periphery and complete their journey on foot or via light rail.

Major Highway Impacts and Construction

On the regional highway system, several long-term construction projects continue to impact travel times. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reminds drivers that the I-494 corridor between Eagan and Richfield remains a major construction zone. Specifically, the westbound entrance ramp to I-494 from Portland Avenue and 12th Avenue is closed for ongoing work through mid-February. Additionally, I-35W northbound is currently reduced to a single lane at the Exit 18 ramp to 4th Street SE, which may cause localized backups during peak afternoon hours.

For those traveling toward the western suburbs, the eastbound entrance ramp to I-394 at Louisiana Avenue remains closed. Commuters should follow the posted detours or consider using Highway 55 as an alternative route into the city.

Metro Transit and Regional Detours

Public transit riders should be aware of several service adjustments today. The METRO Gold Line is currently detoured off 5th Street between Smith Avenue and St. Peter Street until 10:00 PM tonight. This adjustment is to accommodate the Winter Carnival Torchlight Parade in nearby St. Paul, but it will impact eastbound connections originating from Minneapolis. Riders should utilize the Smith and 5th Street Station or the 5th Street and Cedar Station instead of the Rice Park stop.

Furthermore, riders on the METRO Blue Line should note that mechanical issues have sidelined the escalators and south tower elevator at the Lake Street/Midtown Station. The north tower elevator remains operational. Similarly, both elevators at the Franklin Avenue Station are currently out of service; passengers requiring accessible boarding should use the ramp on the north side of the station.

Safety and Cold Weather Precautions

With today being reported as one of the coldest days in years, subzero temperatures are creating additional hazards. While most major highways are reporting normal winter driving conditions, side streets and transit platforms may have slippery patches. Commoters are urged to allow extra time for travel and to wait for transit in heated shelters where available. If you must be on the roads, ensure your vehicle is equipped with a winter emergency kit, as subzero stalls can quickly become dangerous.
