Triple shooting outside North Minneapolis market leaves one dead and two critically injured, police say

Incident reported near Lowry Avenue North
A triple shooting outside a North Minneapolis grocery store left one person dead and two others critically injured, prompting an overnight search for at least one suspect believed to be armed.
The gunfire was reported at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of a market located off Lowry Avenue North near Bryant Avenue, police said. Officers were in the area handling a separate traffic incident when they heard shots and moved toward the parking lot.
What investigators say happened
Police said the initial circumstances appeared to involve two men approaching a parked vehicle on foot, followed by a confrontation. During the encounter, the vehicle reversed and dragged one of the men, police said. That person later collapsed a short distance away and died from injuries sustained during the incident.
The vehicle came to rest after becoming stuck in an embankment, police said. A man driving the vehicle and a woman passenger were then struck by gunfire and transported to hospitals in critical condition. A third person was also shot, according to police.
- One person was pronounced dead at the scene area; the victim was later identified as 19-year-old Jaydon Rashad Cousins of Brooklyn Park.
- Two additional victims were hospitalized with critical injuries, including the driver and a passenger.
- Police said they recovered multiple firearms from the scene and nearby areas.
Evidence and search for a suspect
Police said the city’s gunfire-detection system registered multiple rounds fired during the incident. Investigators reported recovering at least two weapons in connection with the scene, including one found in the parking lot and another located where the deceased victim collapsed.
Authorities said they were searching for at least one suspect who fled on foot. Police indicated they believed the person may have been armed with a “small rifle,” and the search continued after the victims were transported and the scene was secured.
Police said the investigation remained active as detectives worked to establish the roles of those involved, identify any additional suspects, and determine what led up to the exchange of gunfire.
What remains unknown
As of the latest police update, investigators had not publicly announced arrests tied to the shooting. Police also had not released detailed information on a motive, nor clarified whether the victims and suspected shooter(s) knew one another.
Authorities said additional information, including updates on the victims’ conditions and potential charges, would depend on continued investigative steps such as interviews, forensic analysis, and review of available video or other evidence.
