Winter Carnival Parades and Frozen Art Shanties Highlight Minneapolis Events Today

Celebrate the Spirit of the North
Minneapolis and its neighbor Saint Paul are fully embracing the heart of winter this Saturday, January 31, 2026. From the dramatic conclusion of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival to interactive art on frozen lakes, there is no shortage of community events to get you out of the house. Whether you prefer a night of craft beer at a museum or a classic family play, today’s schedule offers a rich variety of local culture.
The Saint Paul Winter Carnival Finale
The 140th anniversary of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival reaches its peak today. The main attraction is the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at 5th and Wacouta Streets. Spectators can watch the Vulcans light up the downtown streets as they make their way to Rice Park. Following the parade, the dramatic Overthrow of King Boreas will take place on the steps of the James J. Hill Library around 8:00 p.m., followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Throughout the day, you can still visit Rice Park to view the professional ice sculptures or head to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for the Vulcan Snow Park activities.
Art Shanty Projects on Lake Harriet
For a unique Minneapolis experience, the Art Shanty Projects are open today from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the frozen surface of Lake Harriet (Bdé Umáŋ). This public art exhibition features a village of creative, temporary structures where local artists host interactive performances and workshops. It is a whimsical way to experience the outdoors and support the local creative community in a setting unlike any other gallery.
Brewsology at the Science Museum
If you are looking for indoor evening entertainment, the Minnesota Brewsology Beer Festival takes over the Science Museum of Minnesota starting at 7:00 p.m. This event combines science exploration with craft beer sampling, featuring more than 50 breweries and 150 different beers. Attendees can wander through the museum’s exhibits while enjoying seasonal pours from some of the region’s best craft producers.
Theater and Stage Performances
Today marks the final opportunity to see the play Somewhere at the Guthrie Theater. This big-hearted family drama, inspired by the playwright’s love for musical theater, is showing on the McGuire Proscenium Stage. For families, the Children’s Theatre Company is hosting performances of the energetic and colorful Go, Dog. Go! throughout the afternoon. Additionally, fans of Broadway can catch Chicago - The Musical at the Orpheum Theatre, offering a touch of jazz and classic choreography to your Saturday night.
City of Lakes Loppet Festival
The Theodore Wirth Regional Park is the place to be for the City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival. This multi-day event features fat bike races and cross-country skiing, but it is also a great spot for non-competitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere, food vendors, and the beauty of the snow-covered trails.
